Real ID

As of May 7, 2025, travelers in the U.S. will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. If your ID does not have the Real ID star in the upper right corner, you may need to update it to avoid travel disruptions.

How to Get a Real ID

To obtain a Real ID, visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and bring the required documents, which typically include:

  • Proof of identity (such as a valid passport or birth certificate)
  • Proof of Social Security number (such as a Social Security card or W-2 form)
  • Two proofs of residency (such as a utility bill or lease agreement)

Alternative Forms of Identification

If you don’t have a Real ID, you can still fly domestically using a U.S. passport, military ID, or other TSA-approved identification.

Plan Ahead

DMV offices are experiencing high demand as the deadline approaches, so schedule your appointment early to ensure you receive your Real ID in time.
